In November 2010, Curtis & Debora Kimbrough stood in front of four families (Denis, Reid, Brannan-Velasquez, and Kimbrough) at a Training Center in Vancouver, WA and cast the vision for a new church. They said, “Vancouver does not need another church. What Vancouver does need is a safe and loving environment where all nationalities, most importantly the unchurched, can come experience the awesome power of God and hear the life-changing truth that Jesus Christ cares for them and died for their sin.” So began Unity Family Church. Darrell Kimbrough heard that message, gave his heart to Christ, and became the first soul saved.
For the first two months of its existence, the congregation of Unity met every Monday night at the Training Center until Emmanuel Church extended an offer to UC to worship at Emmanuel’s East Portland Campus. Although many obstacles took place, UC’s theme scripture, Ephesians 6:10, “Finally my brethren be strong in the Lord and in the power of his might,” resignated in the hearts of our leaders, Curtis & Debora. God’s provision was at every step.
The February opening target date was soon approaching and yet no building; however, they walked in faith knowing God is always on time. God confirmed the current location at 705 SE Parkcrest, #C340, Vancouver, WA, through dreams along with the assistance of James, Beatriz, and Randy.
With little time before the target date, everybody had to pitch in and do whatever needed to be done. We started as a family and made it happen. As a result, we moved to our own facility and began regular Sunday morning services. Members pitched in and purchased a keyboard, drum set, p.a. system, etc. The official opening was held on February 11, 2011 @ 3pm with extended family and friends. And what a wonderful time we had, celebrating, God fulfilling his promise.
We see the Unity Family Church as a dynamic, spirit-filled, multi-cultural church, numbering in the thousands, impacting our community, our city, our nation and our world through leadership development, service, and generosity. Unity is a loving place of refuge, restoration, and revival to effect change in the kingdom of God. Greatness is ahead for us, as we continue moving forward, walking in faith, strength, and victory receiving the fulfillment of every promise God has made to us.
